We spent the evening splitting our time between dancing and watching other people’s scenes. I met Mei’s mate Benny, a short, androgynous omega with buzzed hair, a nose ring, and amber earspools in stretched earlobe piercings. Benny went by they/them pronouns and was apparently the other co-head of venue security.

“Don’t let their size fool you,” Angel told me afterward. “I once watched them put an alpha twice their size in a wrist lock and drag him out the back door. Actually, that’s kind of what inspired me to get serious about fitness.”

As the evening progressed, Xavier was conspicuous by his absence, but I saw Hamid lurking in the back of the venue on a couple of occasions. We also ran into Spencer making the rounds—saying hello to the club-goers, making sure everything was running smoothly. Like Hamid, he wasn’t wearing anything crazy—just black jeans and a T-shirt that stretched across his heavily muscled chest like a second skin. He blinked as he took in my latex-y circus ringmaster costume, and a pleased smile lightened his heavy features.

“So that’s what Hamid was up to yesterday, eh?” he asked, his hazel eyes twinkling.

I grinned back, unable to help myself.

Through it all, I rode the dips and swells of a sort of pleasant, background horniness unlike anything I’d ever really experienced before. It wasn’t like going into heat, which was something I’d mostly avoided since puberty thanks to the availability of blockers. It wasn’t an uncomfortable sensation, exactly—just strange.

As the night wore on, Angel’s caramel scent deepened. I caught him looking at me as we danced, our bodies brushing together in the press of the crowd.

I want him, came the unexpected thought.

It probably should have been more shocking than it was. But... why shouldn’t I want Angel? He was beautiful, and kind, and broken, and brave—all the things that together made him unique and wonderful. I let my body rub against his with more intent, holding his blue gaze beneath the colorful display of flashing laser lights.

When he led me away from the press of dancers to a quiet stretch of wall, hidden behind the platforms of scantily clad people playing games with each other’s bodies and minds, it seemed the most natural thing in the world to let him hem me in with his strong, corded arms and kiss me. I kissed back, tasting his rich sweetness, our tongues tangling until he pulled away, breathless.

“Juni,” he said hoarsely.

I smiled up at him, feeling drunk in all the best ways. “Is it time to go home yet?” I asked.

His eyes bored into mine. “Yes. You know, I really think it is.”
